POLITICANTI – The Politicisation of Corruption and Anticorruption Strategies in Italy (PRIN – bando 2017)
The POLITICANTI project aims at investigating the politicisation of corruption as an issue and of anticorruption initiatives, by shedding light on the success or failure of political actors in adapting to and strategically utilising them.
The project will adopt a multidisciplinary approach focusing on a diachronic perspective on Italy, a country where the issue has become salient since the aftermath of the “Mani Pulite” judicial inquiry in the 1990s.
The extent and effectiveness of strategies in politicizing corruption and anticorruption will be scrutinized by looking at the three faces of power:
(i) politics: how in the upper world political parties and movements respond to the evidence of corruption and to anticorruption waves; how in the underworld networks of political corruption evolve and adapt to the changing environment;
(ii) policy: the impact of politicisation on the implementation of integrity and transparency measures in the public administration, with a special focus on public procurement and on transparency reforms;
(iii) polity: how scandals mediatisation of corruption cases is influenced by the initiatives of political actors, in turn affecting public’s beliefs and evaluations of the extent and boundaries of corrupt practices.
